CLUB Saracens
POSITION Hooker
Matt Cairns, one of the most highly rated hookers in the Guinness Premiership, signed for Saracens from Wirral RFC nine years ago. A product of Wirral Grammar School and Brunel University, he initially spent six seasons with the club, making 65 appearances, before joining Sale Sharks for two years and then switching back to the Men in Black in 2004-05. A product of the Saracens Academy, he has played more than 150 matches for the club. His first representative appearances were for the North Under-16s, followed by games at colts level for London and England. He has also played for England Students and Sevens, the Combined London & South-West Under-21s and captained England at that level. He has represented England Saxons, played in the Churchill Cups of 2003 and 2004 and shown consistency in the set pieces and around the field no matter whose colours he has worn. He signed a new two-year contract with Saracens last summer. It means he will have been with the club for ten years when it expires at the end of next year. Last season he helped Saracens to a fourth-place finish in the Guinness Premiership and a place in the European Challenge Cup semi-finals.
