Toby Flood, a product of the Newcastle Academy, played for Alnwick and Morpeth before joining the Falcons in April 2003. He dropped a goal and kicked two penalty goals as a 19-year-old on his debut in the 29-28 win over London Wasps at Kingston Park in February 2005. Educated at King’s School, Tynemouth, he represented Northumberland Under-16s and 18s, was a county standard athlete and played cricket for the under-16s. He appeared for England Students and helped the Under-21s to achieve a second Grand Slam in three seasons in March last year. His performances at fly half have helped to ease the Falcons’ injury problems in the absence of Jonny Wilkinson. He made the first of his six Test appearances so far off the bench for Charlie Hodgson against Argentina last November and has started England’s last two internationals.
Did you know?
Toby has signed a new contract that will keep him at Kingston Park until the summer of 2008. He is currently studying for a Business Management degree at Northumbria University and said: ”I have learned a lot under John Fletcher and Peter Walton during my time in the Falcons Academy. It can only have helped my game to have worked every day with people such as Matt Burke, Jonny Wilkinson, Rob Andrew, Jamie Noon and Dave Walder.” He enjoys the Red Hot Chili Peppers and is a Newcastle United fan. Toby comes from a thespian lineage. Both of his grandfathers were actors – Gerald Flood featured in the television drama series ‘The Ratcatchers’ and Albert Lieven appeared in the film ‘The Guns of Navarone’. His father, Tim, is the manager of Whitley Bay Playhouse.
