Club:NEC Harlequins IRB Sevens England 2006 George 2007 - Heinken Cup, Harlequins David Strettle, a tryscorer on his England debut when deputising for the injured Jason Robinson against Ireland in February, graduated to Test level after representing England Counties, Sevens and Saxons, for whom he ran in a try on his second appearance against Ireland. He also created IRB Sevens’ history when scoring five first half tries on his England debut against Papua New Guinea last year. He was educated at Lymm High School and studied Sport Science at Sheffield Hallam University from where he joined Earth Titans, scored a hat trick on his debut and then switched to NEC Harlequins this season. He was the Guinness Premiership Player of the Month last February. The story of his England call for the Ireland match is remarkable. “I was driving home and was near Warrington when the phone rang and a voice said: ‘Jason has been injured. We need you in Bath.’ I thought: Jason? Who’s Jason? It had not even occurred to me I was on the verge of the England team after playing only six months of Premiership rugby.”

David is a talented all-rounder. He played rugby league from the age of five, switched to union with the Lymm club two years later and had football trials for Manchester City, Crewe Alexandra, Everton and Liverpool. The problem was that they wanted David, then 11 years old, to give up all other sports that included basketball and swimming. His father, Barry, felt that if he did, he would be deprived of the camaraderie of school games. David now shares a house in Isleworth with England Under-20s captain Danny Care.
