IRB Sevens 2004-2005 - England Squad - Dubai & George
Peter Richards, who joined Gloucester two seasons ago, won his first two caps in the England starting line up in Australia last summer and another four, two as a replacement followed by two starts in the Autumn. He had, however, toured Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in 1998 but was uncapped. He was also on the bench against Manu Samoa in November 2005 as a late deputy for the injured Matt Dawson and played for the England XV in the end-of-season match against the Barbarians.
He initially signed for London Wasps in the summer of 2003 from Bristol and has proved his worth as a centre as well as at scrum half. He has played for England at every level from Under-16s upwards, excelled for two seasons with the England Sevens squad, captained the side and was voted player of the Dubai tournament, which England won. Peter played in the RWC Sevens in Hong Kong in March 2005 and asserts that his favourite career moment was winning the Hong Kong Sevens the previous year. He was a member of the England Churchill Cup squad in North America in two of the past three years and wore the colours of London Irish, from 1996 onwards, and NEC Harlequins before heading to Bristol, Wasps and now Gloucester, where he replaced Andy Gomarsall.
Did you know?
Peter played for the Havant Under-8s as a four-year-old before moving to Farnham and linking with the Wilkinson brothers, Mark and Jonny. He rates his dad, Geoff, a talented Eastern Counties and London Division wing, as the biggest influence on his career, especially while ferrying him to England Schools matches and trials at Wolverhampton. Peter is not a bad football player either and at 13 appeared in midfield for Southampton Schoolboys.
