Jamie Noon, a skilful graduate of the Newcastle Falcons Academy, has won 23 caps, including four last autumn, and in March 2005 became only the third England player to score a hat trick of tries against Scotland, following Cyril Lowe (1914) and John Carleton (1980). He was educated at Fyling Hall School, where he played mostly as a flanker, before appearing for Whitby at fly half, scrum half and wing. He went to Northumbria University on a Falcons’ scholarship with help from Ian Smith, the club’s liaison man there. Jamie joined the Falcons eight seasons ago and has agreed a new two-year contract.
He has also represented English Universities, England Under-21s and Sevens, as well as the Barbarians. Jamie is a major asset in the Falcons’ Premiership ranks and regarded as one of the most incisive runners in the English game. He played an important part in his club’s successful fight for league survival in 2002-03 and was also a key member of the Falcons’ Powergen Cup winning side in 2004. He also shared in their Cup triumph three years earlier and scored his sixth Test try, against New Zealand last November. Three months later, he led England Saxons to a 34-5 victory over Italy A at Exeter.
Did you know?
Jamie thought he would make a good flanker before Newcastle Academy coach Paul McKinnon, a Kiwi, turned him into a centre. ”Without his insight, I don’t think I would be where I am today,” Jamie admits. His England debut followed against Canada alongside then Falcons’ teammates David Walder and Michael Stephenson. Other career high spots include being a member of England’s first winning Hong Kong Sevens side and playing at Twickenham in his club’s 2001 Powergen Cup triumph over NEC Harlequins. Martin Johnson and Jonny Wilkinson, his clubmate and guitar partner, are among the players he most admires. He graduated in 2002 with a degree in Sport & Exercise Science, married Rachel two years later and they now have a son, Lewis and a daughter, Elodie Grace. Jamie likes squash, golf, gardening, sea fishing and loves animals. At the end of his rugby career, he would like to study Zoology.
