Heinke van der Merwe received an SOS from the Springboks in November 2012 and joined the squad in Dublin, his adopted home town since leaving the Golden Lions for Leinster a few seasons ago. A man of few words, he is a very strong scrummager and made an immediate impact for the Springboks, coming off the bench against Ireland. He made an appearance in all three Tests on the Castle Outgoing Tour of 2012.
