Magnus Lund, at 23 years of age, is a tremendous prospect, having won the first of his nine caps to date in Australia last summer and adding two in the autumn, having represented England in the A international against Italy in February 2006. He has proved himself not only at Sharks’ first-team level but also for England Sevens on the world circuit and with England Under-21s from 2002 to 2004 and England Under-19s and18s before that.
He made his international debut in the abbreviated game five seasons ago and was a member of the England squad that won the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March last year. First played for the Sharks against Bristol in 2003, having signed two years earlier. He was educated at Lancaster RGS, studied Business enterprise at Manchester Metropolitan University and is a product of the Sale’s successful Jets’ side.
He excelled for England A against France at Bath in February 2005 but was ruled out of contention for England Saxons Barclays Churchill Cup squad to North America the following summer by a calcified dead leg. Magnus’s brother Erik is a 6ft 8in lock, who joined Earth Titans from Sedgley Park last season and has played for Norway.

Morten Lund, the father of Magnus, is a former Norwegian basketball player who settled in England after studying in Manchester. He is now back in Oslo watching the progress of his sons from afar. Magnus has earned the nicknames of ’Maggie’ and also ’Hutch’ because his long fairhair is similar to that of David Soul in the detective series ’Starsky and Hutch.’
Brought up in Kendal, he was a talented basketball player with Barrow Thorns but decided to concentrate on rugby at the age of 16 and three years later made his Sharks’ senior debut against Bristol. |
