PLAYER WRITE-UP
Injuries have wreaked havoc on the superb Smith's Springbok career as he did not play one minute of Test rugby in 2011 or 2012, missing out on a third RWC appearance. In the end, a serious Achilles injury he sustained early in 2011 meant Smith had to retire from all rugby before the 2013 season started. The hard-working, tough as teak loose-forward – who won Rugby World Cup (2007) and Castle Tri-Nations (2009) titles with the Boks – captained the Boks in their final match of 2010, at Twickenham against the Barbarians. One of the real hard men of the Springbok pack and an icon in the Free State, Smith is fearless on defence and very strong with the ball in hand. At the end of 2011, along with Schalk Burger, he holds the Springbok record for the most tries in Tests as a flank (11).
