Capped in the second international against Japan in Tokyo in the summer of 2001, he celebrated with two of the nine Welsh tries in the 53-30 win. His break into the senior international scene was delayed by major complications with a blood clot in a calf muscle injury. He won honours with Welsh Exiles, and at under 19, 21 and A levels. Started his senior club career with London Welsh before joining Saracens, making his bow for them against Pontypridd on 28 August 1999. Born in Harrow of Welsh parents he was qualified for both Wales and England but opted to follow his four-times capped Tenby-born father in pursuit of Welsh honours. Jim made an 18,000-mile round journey to Japan to watch his son's Test debut.
