Pat Barnard was one of the stars of the triumphant 2002 South African under-21 side that won the IRB World Cup at Ellis Park in Johannesburg by beating New Zealand in the final. The strong tighthead prop played a pivotal role in the South African onslaught on the title. His role was acknowledged when he was named as the International Rugby Board’s under-21 player of the year for 2002. The youngster made his Bankfin Currie Cup debut for Western Province in 2002 and has also been named in the Investec Stormers Vodacom Super 12 squad for the 2003 competition.
