BUDGE POUNTNEY(Northampton Saints). Flanker. Born 13.11.73 in Southampton. 6ft, 14st 7lb. Anthony Charles Pountney scored his fourth try for Scotland in the 37-10 win against Romania last Saturday. Pountney has made a feature of claiming tries in the autumn. He marked his first appearance as Scotland captain with a try – his second in Test match rugby – as the United States were dispatched 53-6 in November 2000. He also captained Scotland in the Autumn Tests against Australia and Samoa, while in 2001 he led Scotland for the first time in the Six Nations Championship when Italy were eclipsed 23-19 at Murrayfield. Pountney enjoyed his fifth game as Scotland skipper – the 32-10 victory against Ireland in September 2001– where he notched his third cap try and was named Man of the Match. In 2000, Pountney was Scotland’s pack leader as they won the Calcutta Cup for the first time in ten years. He was Scotland’s most consistent performer in season 1999/2000 – a tag also attached to his club performances as he helped Northampton win the Heineken European Cup and to the final of the Tetley’s Bitter Cup. He had won his first cap against South Africa in the autumn of 1998, when he also played against New Zealand Maori and Portugal. He savoured Five Nations Championship rugby for the first time when he was introduced against Wales in February, 1999. He went on to play in all of Scotland’s championship matches, that season, twice as a replacement but starting in the final game against France. His first Test try was in the World Cup quarter-final against New Zealand in October 1999. Pountney enjoyed a fine 1998-99 season with Northampton, and he subsequently appeared in all four of Scotland’s matches on the 1999 tour to South Africa, scoring a try in the final game against Golden Lions. He was among Scotland's unused replacements in the 1998 Calcutta Cup match against England - selection that was reward for two fine performances for the Scotland A team against their Irish and French counterparts en route to the Grand Slam at that level. He qualifies for Scotland through a grandmother born in the Channel Islands and has previously represented the Scotland Development XV. He had played for England under-21 before declaring for Scotland. Educated at King's School, Winchester, and Bedford University, where he qualified BA Honours in European Studies, Pountney joined Northampton in 1993. International record: 29 caps. 1998 - SA. 1999 - W(rep) E(rep) It(rep) I(rep) F Arg WC(SA U Sam NZ). 2000 – It I F W E USA A Sam. 2001 – F W E It I. 2002 – E I F W R. Points: 20– 4 tries.
