| Pietie stood out at an early age when he and his father, Pieter (a lock), were jointly named as Player of the Year for their local Patensie rugby club in the Eastern Cape when he was in Standard 9.
The youngster used to play for his school in the morning and for Patensie in the afternoon. He went to Stellenbosch to study agriculture and the dynamic blindside made his Western Province under-21 debut in 1996, but had to wait in the shadows of Skinstad, Krige and Brink.
In 1998, he was in the Maties side that won the SuperSport Club championship for a second time and finally got a prolonged run in the WP side in 1999 due to injuries to the established stars.
A non-stop dynamo of a loose forward - excellent in support as five tries last year demonstrate.
Pietie played in the same school team as Hendrik Gerber - Pietie on the flank, Hendrik at no 8. Twice qualified for the SA championships as a javelin thrower at school and at Stellenbosch. Helped out by switching from WP to Griquas in the Winfield Sevens in 1997 where he first made friends with Robert Markram, with whom he now shares digs.
