PLAYER WRITE-UP
DAVID HILTON (Kirkcaldy and Glasgow Rugby). Prop. Born 3.4.70 in Bristol. 5ft 10½in, 16st. David Ivor Walter Hilton’s returned to international action in November 2002 – having met the IRB’s three year residency requirement – when he played for Scotland A in their win against Romania. In 1999 his international career was brought to a halt when he could find no evidence to substantiate his long-held family belief that his grandfather, Walter, had been born in Edinburgh – the grounds by which he had qualified for Scotland. The grandfather’s birth certificate showed he was born in Bristol, though Hilton pledged to qualify for Scotland through the IRB’s residential clause. Hilton had opted for Scotland rather than the South-West squad which would have placed him on the path to England honours. He made his first appearance for Scotland A in the triumph over South Africa in 1994. His family run a butcher's business in Bristol, the club for whom Hilton first played senior rugby (with 56 appearances) before he switched to Bath in 1992, making his league debut against Rugby in 1993. He helped Bath to win the 1997-98 European Cup, but he came north to join Glasgow Caledonians in 1999. International record: 41 caps. 1995 - C I F W E R WC(T F NZ) WS. 1996 - I F W E NZ1 NZ2 A It. 1997 - W A SA. 1998 - It I F W E A1 A2 SA(rep). 1999 - W(rep) E(rep) It(rep) I(rep) F R(rep) WC(SA(rep) U(rep) Sp). 2000 – It (rep) F (rep) W(rep).
