A former Natal Shark, Welsh made an effortless switch from wing to centre last season and impressed for the Bulls in both the Super 12 and Currie Cup competitions, earning a nomination for Blue Bulls Player of the Year. Powerfully built and possessing good speed, he often breaks the first line of defence and is an exceptional finisher. Became an instant hero in 1999 when he scored the winning try for South Africa in the last minute of the SANZAR under-21 final. Scorer of the second most tries for the Bulls in the Super 12 with seven, he represented SA under-23 in 2000 and 2001 before touring with SA A to Europe late last year.
