Notes: Before concentrating on rugby Riaan excelled in athletics, especially the 100 and 200 metres. He represented both Western Province and Boland in both those events and in 1995 recorded his best time of 10.4 seconds for the 100 metres (21.5 for 200m). Riaan had a very difficult choice between athletics and rugby and South African rugby is the richer for Riaan deciding to give all his energy to the latter.
