After several seasons playing second fiddle at the Lions, the departure of former Springbok scrumhalf Werner Swanepoel to the Leopards has given Bartle the chance to grab a Super 12 spot with the Cats in 2002. Formerly with the Pumas in 1998 and 1999, he re-asserted his quality at last year’s National Club Championship in Stellenbosch where he was named Player of the Match for his Johannesburg club, Pirates. A sound tactical player with a lightning service from the scrum base, he represented South Africa at schools level in 1995.
