Groomed by teammate Willie Meyer, and like Meyer he began his provincial rugby in a smaller rugby region of South Africa, Northern Free State.
He played for the Griffons against the touring British Lions in 1997 before moving to Eastern Province in 1998 from where he was chosen for the Sharks squad for the 2000 Super 12.
Nel moved to the Lions last season where he made his first appearances for the Cats. A solid performance in the Currie Cup saw him retained for this year’s campaign.
