Both teams each scored three tries in this match despite many handling errors conceded. Flyhalf Robert du Preez, centre Tyler Fisher and hooker Jacques Taylor were the try-scorers for the Durban team. DHL Western Province U18 centre Kyle Lombard, hooker Graig Corbett and captain Sikumbuzo Notshe ran in five-pointers for the Cape team.
Winger and captain of the KwaZulu-Natal team Siyabonga Tom kicked one conversion and two penalties while flyhalf Handre Pollard converted all three tries scored by the under-18 team of DHL Western Province. Pollard had the chance to snatch victory for the Cape team after they were awarded a penalty in the final minute of the match when referee Dilbert November penalised the KwaZulu-Natal team for offside play.
However his 50-metre long-range penalty kick failed to have the distance which saw the Durban team claim a nail-biting victory in a match which they dominated in both territory and possession. DHL Western Province struggled at the line-outs and were outplayed at the breakdown. The KwaZulu-Natalians played a brand of rugby which centralised around the play of their 97 kg centre -- Fisher.
The Golden Lions U18 team ran in six tries and recorded an impressive 39-13 victory over Eastern Province in one of the earlier matches.
Centre Burger Odendaal ran in a brace of tries while flanker Daniel Bope, No 8 Ruan Steenkamp, scrumhalf Ruhann Kruger and winger Tshepo Mooki were the other players to score five-pointers for the Johannesburg under-18 team. Golden Lions flyhalf Jaco van der Walt kicked a penalty and three conversions. Flanker Stephan Zaayman was the sole try-scorer for the Eastern Province U18s. His try was converted by Wayne Gardner who also added a drop goal and penalty.
The Zimbabwe under-18 team dazzled the crowd after running in nine tries before defeating the Border Central Districts team 68-3. Flanker Tapiwa Tsomondo scored a hat-trick of tries; Rock Rorke added a brace; while centre Preston Bryant, scrumhalf Robert Sargeant, centre Takudzwa Chieza and winger Tari Ndudzo were the try-scorers for the Zimbabweans. Flyhalf Luke Masasire kicked seven conversions and three penalties to end the match with a personal points haul of 23. Border CD’s only points in the match was scored thanks to a penalty by Devandre Sissing.
The Griffons achieved their first win of the 2011 Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week after securing a 22-16 victory over the Limpopo Blue Bulls. Frans Gerber, Marco Klopper and Ruan van Rensburg were the try-scorers for the Welkom under-18 team while scrumhalf Kallie Erasmus added the two conversions. Flyhalf David van Biljion kicked one penalty. Limpopo Blue Bulls hooker Jan Truter scored his team’s only try. His five-pointer was converted by Jacobus Marais, who also kicked three penalties.
