Baby Boks on stage in Absa U21 Currie Cup

SA Under-20 vice captain and scrumhalf Louis Schreuder will captain the Western Province Under-21 side when they take on Free State in the opening weekend of the Absa Currie Cup U21 in Bloemfontein on Saturday at 15h00.

Schreuder is one of a few players who participated in the recent IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina that will be competing in the Absa Under-21 competition. Prop Wessel du Rand and lock Sebastian de Chaves have been named in the Lions U21 team that will take on the Platinum Leopards on Friday while a number of other SA Under-20s will also be in action this season.

The Absa Currie Cup U19 competition also kicks off this weekend and numerous players who featured in SARU’s 2009 Under-19 High Performance programme such as Free State’s Riaan Britz (fullback), WP’s Nizaam Carr (flank), Willem van Wyk (flyhalf), Ricky Schroeder (scrumhalf), Eben Etzebeth (lock), Jacques Kotze (prop) and the Blue Bulls’ Lean Schwartz (flank), Juan Schoeman (prop), JJ Breedt (lock) and Gerno Eksteen (lock) will all be representing their provinces in this competition.

Baby Boks centre Francois Venter and scrumhalf Lohan Jacobs who both competed in the 2010 IRB Junior World Championship have been selected to the Blue Bulls U19 side.

The Free State U21s and Under-19s begin the defence of their titles this weekend when they host their Western Province counterparts at Vodacom Park on Saturday.

The tournament kicks off in Phokeng on Friday afternoon when the Platinum Leopards U19 hosts the Lions U19 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium (15h15) before the Under-21 sides battle it out at the same venue at 17h00.

At Loftus Versfeld the Blue Bulls U19s play their first Absa Currie Cup Under-19 fixture of the season against the Griffons U19s at 17h05. This game will act as a curtain raiser to the Absa Currie Cup match featuring the Vodacom Blue Bulls and the Pumas.

In Durban The Sharks U21s are also in action on Friday afternoon when the host the Boland Kavaliers at The Absa Stadium Durban, KP 2 at 15h00.

On Saturday Free State U21s play Western Province U21s at Vodacom Park at 15h00 while the Free State U19s are in action against their WP U19 opponents at the same venue at 13h00.

Absa Currie Cup Under-21 competition format:

The fourteen provincial teams are divided into two sections with seven sides each on a strength versus strength basis as follows:

Section A - Blue Bulls, Boland, Free State, Golden Lions, KwaZulu Natal, Leopards, Western Province.

Section B - Border, Eastern Province, Griquas, Griffons, Mpumalanga, South Western Districts, Valke.

The teams in Section A will play a double round within the section - six (6) matches at home and six (6) matches away. Section B will play a single round within the section – three (3) matches at home and three (3) matches away.

After the completed of the double round in the Section A and the single round of Section B matches, the four teams with the most log points will play each other in semi-final matches.
