The ISM Shield was the trophy for an annual match between combined teams of the Northern and Southern rugby provinces under the auspices of the former South African Rugby Board.

The inaugural match was played at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria in 1987 and ended in a 28-28 draw. The second and last match was played in 1988 at Newlands, Cape Town with the Southern Team victorious by 22-10.

This match was mired in controversy.

Playing in an ISM –branded jersey led the players to demand to be compensated for their trouble.

When their request was denied in terms of the rules that governed professionalism in rugby, they covered the sponsors logo.

This led the sponsor to terminate its involvement with the staging of this annual event.
