The Gazelles was the South African Under 24 side under the auspices of the SA Rugby Board.

It alternated with the Junior Springboks and played various international touring teams on their visits to South Africa.

These included the British Lions (1955; 1962; 1964; 1974; 1980), France (1967), New Zealand (1949, 1960, 1970, 1976), Australia (1953, 1969), South American Jaguars (1980), Argentina (1966; 1972), Ireland (1981).

The team itself also undertook various overseas tours under their own name.

This commemorative plaque bears the inscription ”Giro Gazelles” and “Rugby Argentina, 1972 U.A.R.” and dates back to the Gazelles Argentinian tour in 1972.

During their 1972 tour of Argentina, the Gazelles played two tests in total:

1972 - Argentina 6-14 Gazelles, Buenos Aires
1972 - Argentina 18-16 Gazelles Buenos Aires
