Four tries from eighth-man JP Mostert steered the Valke to a convincing 69-7 win (halftime 40-0) over the Limpopo Blue Bulls in their Vodacom Cup match at Hoerskool Merensky in Tzaneen on Saturday.
Former Cheetahs right-wing Jongi Nokwe also chipped in with a hat-trick of his own as the visitors ran in 11 tries against their hapless opponents.
The home fans might have had reason to believe at the very start as they were awarded a kick-able penalty in the second minute. However, fullback Bronwyn Craill’s penalty was wide, and flanker Marco van Eeden punished Limpopo as he opened the scoring in the fifth minute.
The lead was quickly added to, as left-winger Arno Poley dotted down five minutes later, before Mostert scored his first of the afternoon in the 14th minute.
He secured his brace 10 minutes later, and sealed his hat-trick in the 30th minute with a fine score under the poles. There was still time for more carnage before halftime though, as fullback Russel van Wyk scored on the stroke of halftime to take his team out to a 40-0 lead at the interval.
It was the Nokwe show after the restart though, as he scored his first just two minutes into the second half. Substitute Rudi Grobler’s try appeared little more than a blemish on the scoreboard, as Nokwe piled on the misery to the home side, wrapping up his hat-trick within the next 10 minutes.
Mostert was not to be outdone though, and the big eighth man had his fourth in the 76th minute, before centre Coert Cronje completed the thrashing with a score one minute from time.
The bonus-point win for the Valke was just their second of the competition, and it helped them up to sixth place in the Northern Section.
The Limpopo outfit, however, will be left licking their wounds as they are still yet to get off the mark in the standings.
