The Leopards jumped to the top of the Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship table on Saturday when they beat DHL Western Province in Potchefstroom, taking away the visitors undefeated status in the process.
Things also went horribly wrong for SWD Eagles, who were thrashed 99-3 by the Free State in Bloemfontein, while in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal did themselves no favours by dropping a close match to the visiting Golden Lions team.
In Potchefstroom, the accurate boot of JJ du Plessis proved the difference between the sides. DHL WP scored four tries to three, but they could only convert two of them.
Du Plessis kicked all three conversions and two penalties, but it was a late try two minutes from time by centre Hennie Marais that won the match for the home side, who still trailed 13-19 at the break.
In Bloemfontein, the home side scored 15 tries without reply. Rual Laubscher and Seabelo Senatla scored hat-tricks, while Jan Strumpher and Sheldon Erasmus kicked seven and five conversion respectively.
Free State was up 45-3 at the break and continued with their all-out attack in the second half. The Eagles has now conceded 41 tries in four matches and will clearly have to improve before the second round of the competition.
The Golden Lions won 29-28 in Durban after leading 17-11 at the break.
Fullback Hanco Deale kicked five penalties and converted both tries by Peter-John Walters to edge his side in front.
Rob du Preez also kept the scorers busy, contributing 18 of his side points with a try, two conversions and three penalties, but it proved to be in vain.
