Women’s league heading for exciting showdown
August 29, 2012
The SARU Women’s Inter-Provincial tournament is heading for an exciting showdown this weekend and for the first time ever the final log standings will be determined by results on the last day of the remaining league fixtures.

The teams will be fighting it out on the last day of the regular league fixtures for places in the semi-finals and finals which are scheduled for the weekend of 15 and 22 September respectively.

In Section A, the log lead has changed hands several times in Group 1 between the Blue Bulls, Border and Western Province. This coming weekend the two top teams, WP and Border, will clash to determine the log winner in this section.

Border is under more pressure to secure a win a victory against Province. They need to pick up maximum points against the Cape girls to advance to the play-offs. However, if Blue Bulls win their match against the Southwestern Districts by a bonus-point margin then it will come down to points-difference between them and Border. As things stand currently, both teams have nine league points so far, with Border boasting a slightly better average.

In Group 2 the other section the Free State girls will be up against the Golden Lions and in Welkom the Griffons host the Boland. Currently the Free Staters look most likely to play against the Group 1 leaders KwaZulu-Natal. The KZN outfit is enjoying a break this coming weekend and they have amassed maximum points from their outings.

In Section B things will go to the wire to determine the final positions. Second-placed Limpopo will host the Leopards and a win for Limpopo will take them to the top of the log. A Leopards win could also put them in contention for the final. The Pumas girls, the current pacesetters in this section, have a bye and the weekend’s action will also decide their fate.
