Sampie Mastriet ran in four tries as the Vodacom Blue Bulls hammered the Valke 74-14 (half-time 38-7) in their Vodacom Cup North Section match at Hugenote High School in Springs on Saturday.
Left-wing Mastriet needed just 24 minutes to complete his hat-trick of tries while he grabbed his fourth try three minutes into the second half in a devastating display of finishing.
The Blue Bulls ran in 12 tries in total as they completely overwhelmed their opponents who could only reply with two tries, through scrumhalf Anrich Richter and flyhalf Jaun Kotze.
Flank Wian Liebenberg, right wing Travis Ismail and replacement centre Courtnall Skosaan all crossed for two tries each as the visitors claimed their third win from five matches in a welcome return to form after losing 26-33 to the Steval Pumas in their previous match.
The Blue Bulls opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Liebenberg rumbled over for his first try.
The 22-year-old Mastriet, who was part of South Africa’s squad at the IRB Junior World Championships in 2009, nabbed his first try six minutes later before the Valke hit back with a converted try from Richter in the 19th minute.
The try cut the Blue Bulls’ lead to 17-7 but it was as close as the Valke would come as Mastriet, fullback Clayton Blommetjies and Liebenberg all dotted down before half time as the visitors reached the break leading 38-7.
The floodgates opened in the second half with the Valke unable to cope with the Blue Bulls’ sheer power with the visitors running in six second-half tries.
The hosts managed a single try in the second half when Kotze sniped over in the 51st minute before he converted his own try as the flyhalf ended with nine points courtesy of his try and two conversions.
