Reigning Vodacom Cup champions Western Province edged last placed Border Bulldogs (22-13) in their Vodacom Cup match yesterday.
Border had Province under pressure for most of the first half and kept running the ball at them. The visitors scored the first points of the match when fullback Duane Adams scored in the corner after a good line-break by Border-winger Joe Seerane. He sliced through the Province backline and was eventually dragged down 5 metres from the tryline. Adams collected the ball from the ruck and dove over effortlessly for the try. Flanker Juan Bester scored in the same corner after yet another Border attack.
Province had to wait 30 minutes for their first points when flanker Chris Cloete went over after a good rolling maul from a lineout. The Border had no answer to Provinces rolling maul on the day. WP flyhalf Kurt Coleman converted to bring his team within three points.
Minutes later Border flyhalf Karlo Aspeling extended his teams lead with a penalty before Coleman kicked another three points on halftime to make the score 13-10 in Borders favour.
Western Province played more like Champions in the second-half putting Border under pressure with wave after wave of attack. Border saw little of the ball in the first 15 minutes of the second half but managed to keep Province from crossing their tryline. Full back Cheslin Kolbe kept the Border defence on the guess and had quite a few exciting runs. Seerane on his turn kept the Province defenders on their toes with his pace everytime he touched the ball.
The men from Cape Town dotted down for the second time after a well worked attack with winger Devon Williams scoring in the corner. Minutes later a rolling maul produced the third try for Western Province when replacement-hooker Jody Reyneke dove over.
