GWK Griquas have been crowned Vodacom Cup champions for 2014 after beating the Golden Lions comprehensively by 30-6 in the final at GWK Park in Kimberley on Saturday evening.
The Peacock Blues have now drawn level with the Lions with regards to titles, with both sides claiming the cup a record five times.
The Lions came into the game as the underdogs and in the end were completely dominated by the Northern Cape based side.
The Lions started well and came into some points within the first two minutes with flyhalf Willie du Plessis slotting a easy penalty to put his side on the score board.
Griquas answered back shortly thereafter with a drop goal by flyhalf Francois Brummer, much like the one he slotted last weekend against the Steval Pumas in the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
Du Plessis got another couple of shots at goal but missed twice. He was successful with a drop goal however and opened up the lead to three points after the Lions did well to stay in Griquas half.
It was never going to be a high scoring affair in the final, and Griquas fullback Gouws Prinsloo slotted his first penalty of the evening to draw the scores level at six points apiece.
Prinsloo got another penalty shot in the 33rd minute to give the hosts the lead, which they stretched to 10 points after some good pressure and a try by Brummer. Prinsloo converted to make the score 16-6 in favour of the Peacock Blues, which would also be the halftime score.
Griquas started the second half with an immense effort, putting much pressure on the Lions with some good defence and clever attacking play. The result was two converted tries in the second stanza, while the Lions couldn't manage to add a single point to their total.
First it was replacement winger Danie Dames that went over in the corner after some good pressure was applied by the hosts, with Prinsloo converting.
Then flanker Marnus Schoeman got his try after he played a good game. He burst over shortly before fulltime and Prinsloo converted to help give his side a comprehensive victory.
