Blue Bulls keep rolling on
September 10, 2012
The Vodacom Blue Bulls Under-21 team continues to swat away challengers to their leading log position in the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship. The Pretoria side travelled to Johannesburg where they outgunned the MTN Golden Lions 29-21 on Saturday.

KwaZulu-Natal also scored an important win away from home, beating the Toyota Free State 40-28 in Bloemfontein, whilst the Border Bulldogs fought hard till the end, but could not match the Leopards in East London.

The Leopards started like a house on fire, with winger Anton Kruger dotting down in the first minute of play. A conversion and two penalties by Warren Gilbert quickly extended the lead to 13-0, before the hosts found their feet and started to respond.

Tries by PG Kruger and Graham O’Leary closed the gap to one point at the break.

Gilbert and Dale Sabbagh traded penalties and when George Fritz scored in the 60th minute, the Bulldogs took the lead for the first time in the match.

A penalty and a drop goal by Gilbert got his side back in front, before a late try by Herman Basson and converted by Gilbert secured the 29-20 win.

Fred Zeilinga kicked four conversions and four penalties in Bloemfontein, where a strong first half propelled KZN towards victory. They lead 27-9 at the break, helped along by two tries from Sizo Maseko, scored in the 21st and 29th minutes of the match.

The Free State did outscore the visitors three tries to one in the second half, but there was always only one winner in this one.

The Blue Bulls scored four tries at the University of Johannesburg Stadium, with backs Ulrich Beyers, Jan Serfontein and Courtnall Skosan all on the score sheet.

The Lions started well and had a 14-8 lead at the break, but once the visitors found their stride and rhythm, three tries in the last 20 minutes confirmed their domination.
