Kings jonges spring goed weg
August 20, 2012

The EP Kings, Griquas and Valke started best in the opening round of the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship B-Division on the weekend.

The Kings showed that they should be seen as early favourites to claim the title by beating Boland Kavaliers 61-10 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, while Griquas and Valke won away from home.

GWK Griquas edged out the Pumas in the Mbombela Stadium and Valke outstayed the Griffons 31-17.

The Kings were way too good for Boland in their clash In Port Elizabeth, outscoring them nine tries to one.

Four of those came from scrumhalf, Kayle van Zyl, who later moved to wing. Van Zyl also kicked eight conversions for a personal tally of 36 points. His tries came in the 7th, 10th, 25th and 74th minutes.

In the Mbombela Stadium, a late try by their flyhalf Jonty Gray won the match for Griquas against the Pumas.

It was a tight affair throughout the match with the home side leading 6-3 at the break.

Gray levelled matters with a penalty after the restart and also cancelled out a penalty by Philip Range.

A try by Tembi Nkosi seemingly won it for the Pumas, but Gray scored in the last minute and converted to secure a 16-14 win.

The Valke have to thank a solid first half display for their 31-27 win over the Griffons. The visitors had a 21-8 lead at the break.

Friedel Olivier and Peter Mathews both scored a brace for the Valke, as did Pieter Botha for the home side.

The Griffons will not be happy for dropping a match at home, but did secure two bonus points for losing by less than seven and scoring four tries.
