Border Bulldogs surprise Under-21 leaders
July 23, 2012
The Border Bulldogs are the surprise log leaders after two rounds of the Absa Under-21 provincial championships. The East London side followed up their win over the Vodacom Blue Bulls last week by scalping the Leopards 29-27 in Potchefstroom for a consecutive win in the A-section of the competition.

It was a tight affair though, with the home side, trailing 16-0 at the break, scoring four tries in the second half to storm into a 27-19 lead. The visitors kept plugging away though and a fifth penalty to flyhalf Dale Sabbagh in the 71st minute kept his side in the hunt.

A try in the 78th minute by replacement lock Ivan Kruger equalled up the scores for the Bulldogs and Sabbagh fittingly kicked the winning conversion in the last minute of play.

Earlier KZN opened their tournament with a win over the Toyota Free State in Durban. The home side won 31-9 in a match dominated by kickers. Junior Boks loose forward Braam Steyn scored the only try of the match, with Fred Zeilinga kicking a conversion and eight penalties.

The Free State points came via penalties by Pieter-Steyn de Wet and a late drop goal by Marco Mason.

The accurate boot of Vodacom Blue Bulls centre, Ulrich Beyers, also saw his side through to a close win over the MTN Golden Lions at Loftus B on Friday.

The home side won 28-25 with Beyers’ seventh penalty the only difference.

Junior Bok Marais Schmidt kicked his side into a 16-9 lead at the break with three penalties and converting Ettienne Oosthuizen’s try, before the home side clawed their way back.

A try by Jan Serfontein helped their cause, with Beyers kicking the winning points in the 75th minute of the match.
