KZN, WP edge closer as Blue Bulls slip

The Vodacom Blue Bulls are still on top of the log of the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship, but a defeat at home in Pretoria to the DHL Western Province on the weekend not only gave their conquerors the opportunity to chase down their lead, but also opened the door for KwaZulu-Natal to come within striking distance of the leaders.

KZN won against Border, while the Leopards edged the MTN Golden Lions and confirmed this very talented team to also-rans in the competition.

At Loftus B, the visitors won a closely contested match 34-29 after leading 22-9 at the break.

Two penalties by Tim Swiel and tries by Dillyn Leyds and Dean Hammond rocked the home side and they were forced to play catch-up rugby from that point onwards. Two tries by Riaan Britz from the back and one by replacement outside back, Damian van Wyk gave the Blue Bulls some momentum in their comeback effort, but a converted try seven minutes from the end sealed a convincing win for WP.

The Leopards edged the MTN Golden Lions 37-36 at the death, but only the visitors will know how they lost this match. They were leading 33-20 at the break, with scrumhalf Vian van der Watt scoring twice and Marais Schmidt converting four of their five first half tries.

The last ten minutes of the match belonged to the Leopards however as fresh legs clinched the deal for them.

SJ Niemand and Malherbe Swart scored tries and Warren Gilbert converted and kicked a penalty to secure a full house to the Leopards.

In the other fixture of the weekend KZN, without the services of suspended prop Allan Dell, had too much class for the Border Bulldogs in Durban. The home side scored four tries to two in wet conditions and after leading 23-10 at the break, continued to build on their first half effort and won 38-23 in the end.
