SARU announces final South African Under-20 Training Squad
April 30, 2009
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has announced the names of the 28 players invited to the final South African Under-20 training trials in Saldanha from the 10 – 24 May 2009.

The trials will give players a last chance to impress the national selectors ahead of the announcement of the official SA Under-20 World Cup squad for the IRB World Junior Championships taking place in Japan from the 5 – 22 June 2009.

“It will be an achievement for any of these players to make the final squad as the competition is fierce,” said SA Rugby Manager of Playing the Game Mervin Green.

“Our Under-19 and Under 20 structures are the stepping stones in the development of these players as many of the current Super Rugby players comes from these very same structures.

“Players such as Jean de Villiers, Adrian Jacobs, Francois Steyn, Pierre Spies to name but a few, were all once part of SARU’s Under-19 and 20 programs.

“Our intentions are that from the Under-20 squad, many of these players would soon play Super Rugby and eventually graduate to the Green and Gold.

One such player is Springboks Sevens star and Vodacom Free State Cheetahs centre Robert Ebersohn who has also been invited to the training camp.
