Tries aplenty in Absa Under-19 competitions
September 04, 2012
A deluge of tries so far in the Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship has given the Vodacom Blue Bulls an edge over the DHL Western Province in their race to top the log of the competition. With 39 tries scored in seven matches, the Pretoria side are way ahead of their Cape rivals, who have scored 26, but also have 29 log points.

The Blue Bulls scored ten of those on Friday against SWD Eagles in their very convincing 60-13 win over the visitors at Loftus. The home side were 20-10 up at the break in a match that will be remembered for Blue Bulls prop Jan-Frederick Enslin’s haul of 21 points. He not only scored three tries, but kicked three conversions as well.

The Western Province team could not capitalise on their strong first half showing against the MTN Golden Lions side at Newlands on Saturday, but still scored the four tries needed to record the bonuspoint needed to stay top with the Blue Bulls. They raced to a 22-3 lead at the break and after a second try by Jean-Paul Lewis enjoyed a 27-6 lead. The visitors then scored twice for a more rewarding scoreline of 27-18.

In the other fixture played on Saturday, a hat-trick by Seabelo Senatla secured the Toyota Free State a 29-15 win over the Leopards in Potchefstroom.

The winger scored in the opening minute and again after 17 minutes to help his side to a 17-3 lead at the break and added another in the 67th minute as the visitors romped home.

In the First Division, GWK Griquas remained unbeaten by beating the Regent Boland Kavaliers in Wellington. The visitors won 21-17 in rainy conditions, thanks to the boot of Andrè Roberts, who kicked three penalties, a conversion and scored a try for a personal tally of 16 points.

The conditions were much better in Nelspruit and Nigel however and resulted in plenty of tries. The EP Kings scored six tries to two in their 43-24 win over the Valke, while the Pumas scored seven tries to one in their 49-11 demolition of the Border Bulldogs.
