Leopards impress in Under-19 competition
September 10, 2012
The Leopards continue to punch above their budget in the Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship, having won five of the eight matches they have played in the competition. They are in third place on the log after a good win over the SWD Eagles in George and could prove to be a real surprise package in the competition.

Log leaders Vodacom Blue Bulls kept their lead by beating the MTN Golden Lions in Johannesburg, while KwaZulu-Natal scored an important win on the road by beating the Toyota Free State in Bloemfontein.

The Leopards scored six tries to one, but could only break the shackles in the second half. Scores were tied 15-all at the break, but in the second half, Leopards tries came at regular intervals.

In Johannesburg, the Blue Bulls struck early and held out for a good win. Tries by Burger Odendaal and Jacques du Plessis just before the break and another by Jason Kriel at the restart gave the visitors the buffer they needed for a 22-18 win.

KZN also fought hard to beat the home side 40-31 in Bloemfontein, where nine tries were scored in all. Rob du Preez kicked well to the poles and succeeded with three conversions and three penalties. Sheldon Erasmus scored a brace for the home side, as did Kyler Fisher for KZN.

•In the First Division, Border is a somewhat surprising log leader after winning all three their matches thus far. On Friday they showed off some of their abilities by smashing GWK Griquas 50-20. The home side scored seven tries to two, with Aubrey Faul and Lukhanyo Am getting a brace. Griquas were trailing 24-13 at the break and could not contain Border in the second half.

In Kempton Park, the Valke won 21-14 against the Ford Pumas with the accurate boot of Lloyd Greeff the difference between the sides, who both scored two tries.

The Griffons also kept the Regent Boland Kavaliers winless in the competition by beating them 26-14 in Welkom. Things were tight at the break with the home side leading 7-0, but they romped home in the second, courtesy of a brace by Neceedo Pietersen.
