Pumas XV vs Namibia

The visiting Namibia team were given a tough rugby lesson by the hosting union when they were walloped 34-0. Half-time score was 14-0.

The home side opened their account with a try in the first minute by Clinton Liebenberg. It was converted by Daniel Grobler. Thirteen minutes later, Gerhardus Terblanche crossed the scoring line. Grobler again converted.

The rest of the tries were by Johannes Van Der Westhuizen (35th minute), Sifiso Mahlangu (38th), and Timothy Pretorius (51st). Grobler converted Mahlangus try and scored a penalty. The rest of the tries were not converted.

KwaZulu-Natal vs Blue Bulls

In one of the toughest contests of the opening day, the Pretoria-based Blue Bulls managed to hold on to their half-time lead of 18-15 to finish the game against KwaZulu-Natal with 24 points to 18. Each of the teams scored two tries.

KZN opened their account with a penalty kick by Frederick Zeilinga in the third minute, but the Bulls replied with a three on the board when Morne van den Berg kicked through the poles in the fifth minute.

The first try of the game came from the Blue Bulls Angelo Nhlapo in the ninth minute., converted by Van Den Berg. Three minutes later, Andile Mtshali gave KZN five more points, converted by Zeilinga.

Van Den Berg's two penalty kicks in the second half (28th and 32nd minutes) gave the Bulls a good lead before Mtshali narrowed the score with a try in the 50th minute. Zeilinga failed to convert.

Western Province vs Lions

These traditional rivals lived up to the crowds expectations when they played yet another tight game, with a 19-15 victory to the Capetonians. Half-time score was WP 6, Lions 3.

Although the Lions scored two tries to WP's one, they were let down by the number of penalties conceded and a missed conversion.

Points in the first half came via penalty kicks, with Gavin Hauptfleish putting WP in the lead (7th and 17th minutes). The Lions points came from David Schmidt.

Tshotsho Mbovane increased the lead for WP with a 32nd minute try, converted by Hauptfleish. The Lions first try came from Fabian Booysen in the 34th minute and the second by Willem Viljoen in the 46th minute. Schmidt failed to convert the former but was successful with the latter.

The rest of the points came from Hauptfleishs penalty kicks.

Free State vs Border

Border failed to capitalize on their 5-3 half-time lead, to lose the game by 5-15 in one of the most fascinating games of the day.

Aphiwe Tokwe's 14th minute try gave Border the lead, while Free State managed a penalty kick via Johannes Goosens boot in the eighth minute.

The rest of the points came through penalty kicks in the 33rd, 45th and 47th minutes by Goosen.

Falcons vs Border Country Districts

After a tight first half (12-10 to Falcons), Border Country Districts ran out of steam for the rest of the game when they failed to earn points in the second half.

The first try came in the ninth minute from the Falcons Michael Holtzhausen. Two minutes later Border's Siphesihle Bidli crossed the scoring line. Lwandile Dabalele converted for Border CD. Bidlis 25th minute penalty kick gave Border its full complement of points for the day.

In the second half, the Falcons scored three tries (Wian Lamprecht, 41st and 49th; Holtzhausen, 50th). Barnard converted two and missed one.

Griffons vs South Western Districts

This game was yet another case of a brilliant first-half play and lesser-than-expected second-half performance for one of the teams. The Griffons 10-5 lead in the first-half was reversed by SWD to a 10-16 loss at end of play.

The Griffons points came from a penalty kick (7th minute) by Luan Van Rensburg and a 25th minute try by Barend Wessels, converted by Van Rensburg.

SWD opened their account with a fifth-minute try by Justin Ruiters. In the second half, Jaco Arendse equalized for SWD. The rest of their points came from Johannes Potgieter, with a penalty kick in the 39th minute and a drop goal two minutes later.

Limpopo vs Boland

Pumas vs Eastern Province

In yet another blow for an Eastern Cape side, EP threw away a 9-6 lead in the first half to lose the game by 9-19. As was the case with Border, the Cape boys failed to score in the second half.

The game saw only one try, from Nicolaas Van Vuuren in the 35th minute, converted by Johannes Scheepers.

The penalty kicks for EP were from Jan Serfontein (4th , 14th and 24th minutes), while the home side's were from Scheepers (9th , 18th, 31st and 49th).
