EP takes honours at Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week
July 07, 2011
Eastern Province claimed top honours at the 2011 Coca-Cola Under-16 Grant Khomo following their 34-12 victory over SWD Eagles in the final match played in Queenstown on Thursday.

The team from Port Elizabeth played some enjoyable, running rugby at the Queens College Sport Grounds and were rewarded with five tries which were scored by Jason Vers, Justin Antonie, Martin Groenewald, Peet Schoeman, and Sintu Majenzi.

Flyhalf Theo Stapelberg converted three five-pointers and kicked one penalty. SWD Eagles’ points were scored thanks to five-pointers from Douw Schoeman and Geor Malan. Flyhalf Arno Moolman added one conversion.

Eastern Province was also the only undefeated team at the 2011 Coca-Cola Under-16 Grant Khomo Week after they managed to beat both the Golden Lions (13-3) and Western Province (14-10) in their earlier matches played this week. The South Western Districts team was in fine form during the week and notched up two wins which were against the Blue Bulls (22-10) and KwaZulu Natal (25-8).

In the other matches played on Thursday, Free State staged a thrilling comeback to defeat the Valke (22-15) while the Blue Bulls were too powerful for the Griffons and secured a 38-12 win in Queenstown. The Golden Lions defeated the KwaZulu Natal 22-12.

Western Province, who conceded defeats against the Eastern Province (14-10) and Free State (11-6), earned their first and only win of the 2011 Coco-Cola Under-16 Grant Khomo Week following their 19-17 win over the Pumas. Hosts Border failed to win a match this week and conceded defeats against KwaZulu Natal (33-20), Boland (11-10) and the Golden Lions (23-12).

The 2011 Coca-Cola Youth Weeks continues in Kimberley next with the Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week which kicks off at GWK Park on Monday.

The SA Schools team as well as the SA Academy team will be announced at the conclusion of the Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week.
