Border Bulldogs shock Blue Bulls in U21 opener
July 16, 2012
The Border Bulldogs turned the Absa Under-21 competition on its head on Friday by beating the Vodacom Blue Bulls 28-23 in East London.

This was the opening match of this year’s competition and in cold and wet conditions the home side scored three tries to two in a famous win.

Shaun Niewenhuyzen scored a try and kicked two penalties, while Ruan Uys scored a try and then sealed the result with a dropped goal in the 78th minute of the match.

JJ Breet scored twice for the visitors and Tony Jantjies kicked the rest of their points.

In other results on Saturday, the Toyota Free State had too much firepower for the Leopards, beating the Potchefstroom-based side 28-0 in Bloemfontein. JJ De Klerk scored a hat-trick of tries in the win, but the Free State failed to get a bonus point.

DHL Western Province also scored a good win against the MTN Lions in Johannesburg, with a number of the Junior World Cup winning Junior Boks giving good account of themselves.

Dillyn Leyds kicked two conversions and two penalties in WP’s 25-19 win over the home side, while Marais Schmidt contributed 14 points to the Lions with four penalties and a conversion.
