Blue Bulls, Leopards and Lions win
September 03, 2012
The Vodacom Blue Bulls are sitting pretty on top of the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championships after their six consecutive win in the competition, while the MTN Golden Lions shocked DHL Western Province with a last gasp winner at Newlands. The Leopards also won against the Toyota Free State Cheetahs.

The Blue Bulls took revenge of their season opening loss against Border by beating them 57-21 at Loftus B this time around. The home side held a 24-11 advantage at the break and scored eight tries to two, with Basil Short scoring a brace.

The home side scored as early as the third minute when Cloete Wessels crashed over, with Craig Pheiffer following suit five minutes later. Short, who came on as a tighthead replacement, scored in the 63rd and 77th minute.

The Leopards have a good first half to thank for their 35-25 win over Free State. Early tries by Anton Kruger and Rowayne Beukman gave the home side a 18-3 lead at the break.

A try by Edmar Marais just after the break extended the lead to 25-3 before the visitors started to fight back.

Carl Wegner’s try coincided with Leopards winger Kruger’s red card (two yellows) and that made the comeback easier for Free State.

Neill Jordaan’s try and another by Kevin Luiters closed to the score to 25-20, but Beukman’s second and the conversion by Warren Gilbert sealed the match.

JJ de Klerk did score on the buzzer to give the visitors a fourth try bonus point.

Western Province was shocked by a late try from Golden Lions winger Bradley Moolman and a match-winning conversion by Marais Schmidt after the final buzzer which gave the visitors a 28-27 win.

It was a seesaw affair. The Golden Lions had a 13-0 lead at halftime. After Rayn Smid scored for WP, the Lions extended the lead to 18-5 when Robert du Bruyn scored. Tries by Pat Howard, Vincent Jobo and a penalty try in the 79th minute seemed to seal the win for WP.

With less than a minute to go and trailing by 27-21, the Lions worked the ball upfield and Moolman could crash over for Schmidt to kick a famous conversion.
