Lions U19s leave it late against FS
August 13, 2012
The MTN Golden Lions secured a nail-biting 25-21 win over the Toyota Free State on Saturday to make sure they stay in touch with the log leaders in Absa’s Under-19 Provincial Championship.

The home side started the season badly, but is recovering well and now boasts with three wins from five matches. The Vodacom Blue Bulls (four games) and Leopards (five matches) are the current log leaders with 15 points each, while DHL Western Province (14), Golden Lions (13) and The Sharks (11) are still all in contention.

The Golden Lions scored three tries to two against Free State, with the third at Coca-Cola Park, by Jacques Nel, proving to be the match winner.

Scores were tied 13-all at the break and when Madala Ndinisa scored for the visitors with ten minutes left on the clock, a home defeat was on the cards. Nel scored in the 67th minute and Hanco Deale kicked the conversion to secure the win.

DHL Western Province managed to beat KwaZulu-Natal in cloudy and rainy conditions at DHL Newlands. The weather was always going to be a factor in this match and only one try was scored in the 16-6 win, with Johan Kirsten scoring just before the break to give his side a 10-3 advantage.

The rest of the points came from the boot of Tomasso Allan who kicked a conversion and three penalties while Brendan Cope and Rob du Preez each succeeded with a penalty for the Natal side.

In a match played on Friday, the Vodacom Blue Bulls had to rally in the second half of their match against the Leopards at Loftus Versfeld. An early try by Luther Banks St Charles Obi hurt the Blue Bulls and it took a while for them to recover.

They were 3-5 down at the break, but thanks to a try by Ruwellyn Isbell and some accurate goal kicking by Francois Tredoux and Jacques Rossouw, the home side could secure a 13-8 win.
