Blue Bulls, Leopards and KZN in U21 wins
July 30, 2012
The Vodacom Blue Bulls Under-21 side got a full house at Newlands on Saturday as they outplayed the DHL Western Province in the second half of their Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship match at DHL Newlands on Saturday.

The visitors got their bonus point in their 35-23 win in the 67th minute when winger Travis Ismaiel finished off some great running and handling of his team mates in the lead-up and then defended stoutly to make sure WP returned to their change room empty handed.

Two penalties by Dillyn Leyds did give the home side an early lead, but with captain and No 8 Arno Botha leading the way, the Blue Bulls soon began piling on the pressure.

A late penalty goal and converted try by Ulrich Beyers gave them the lead at the break, but after the resumption of matters, the Blue Bulls took control.

Tries by Botha and Shaun Adendorff took the game away from WP and although the home side scored three times in the second half, they never looked like catching up with Blue Bulls lead.

The MTN Golden Lions are not having any luck this far in the competition and came up short against the Leopards in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The visitors won 36-28 and outscored the Golden Lions five tries to four in a match where a strong second half effort secured the win.

An early try by scrumhalf Malberbe Swart got things going for the Leopards, but converted tries by Paul Willemse and Jako Viljoen allowed the Golden Lions some leeway in the first half an hour.

The Leopards came back with a bang in the last ten minutes of the half though with two tries of their own, including one from Lance Ruthford, who also converted his own try to give the Leopards a 20-14 lead at the break.

A successful drop goal by Ruthford and a try shortly thereafter by flanker Ernie Strydom gave the Leopards even more momentum.

SJ Niemand also scored in the first ten minutes of the new half, giving his side a commanding 33-14 lead. The Golden Lions came back with a try by Bradley Moolman and a second by Viljoen, but a drop goal by Jonny Welthagen late in the match took away the win and a second bonus point from the home side.

On Friday night, KZN outplayed the Border Bulldogs in difficult conditions at Buffalo Park in East London.

The visitors won 52-24 after a 30-7 lead at the break. They scored seven tries to three, with winger Sizo Maseko getting a hat-trick.

He scored in 11th, 46th and 68th minute as his side romped home with ease.
