WP U21s battle past Leopards as Bulls beat Sharks
July 20, 2014
Another massive defeat to Border and good wins to DHL Western Province and the Vodacom Blue Bulls highlighted play of this weekend's Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship.

Defending championships, WP, had to work hard to beat the Leopards in Cape Town, while the Vodacom Blue Bulls were very convincing in dispatching the Cell C Sharks in Pretoria. On Friday, the Golden Lions stacked up 12 tries to easy beat Border in East London.

A summary of the matches are:

Vodacom Blue Bulls (Under-21) 53, Cell C Sharks (Under-21) 25.

They scored a 100 against Border last week and this time around it was the Cell C Sharks who surrendered 50 points to a rampant Vodacom Blue Bulls Under-21 team in Pretoria.

The home side's Under-21's scored six tries against Sharks, with the real thrust coming in the second half of the match at Loftus B on Saturday.

Scores were still tied at halftime (18-18), but there was only one side on the field in the second half, with the Vodacom Blue Bulls running in four tries.

Flyhalf Kobus Marais had a field day, scoring 28 points.

Scorers:

Blue Bulls 53 (18). Tries: Kefentse Mahlo, Kobus Marais, Marquit September, Neethling Fouche, Pierre Schoeman, Ruan Steenkamp. Conversions: Marais (4). Penalties: Marais (4). Drop Goal: Marais.
Sharks 25 (18). Tries: Buzwe Mpotulo, Cameron Wright, Tyler Fisher. Conversions: Tim Swiel (2). Penalties: Swiel (2).

DHL Western Province (Under-21) 27 (20), Leopards (Under-21) 20 (10).

It was a tight affair at City Park in Cape Town, but thanks to the accurate boot of former Junior Springbok Robert du Preez, DHL Western Province could squeeze past the visiting Leopards.

Both teams scored two tries, but a better start and the accuracy of Du Preez kept the visitors at bay.

Scorers:

DHL Western Province 27 (20). Tries: Eital Bredenkamp, Lihleli Xoli. Conversion: Robert du Preez. Penalties: Du Preez (5).
Leopards 20 (10). Tries: Andries du Plooy, Wilmar Arnoldi. Conversions: JJ du Plessis (2). Penalties: JJ du Plessis, Ryno Smith

Golden Lions (Under-21) 82 (28), Border Bulldogs (Under-21) 6.

The Border Under-21 team is in serious trouble if results of their first two weeks of the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship are anything to go by.

After conceding 143 points to the Vodacom Blue Bulls last week in Pretoria, they had nothing to offer when the Golden Lions came to East London, this time conceding 12 tries in an 82-6 defeat on Friday.

The visitors had to work hard in the first half and scored four tries, but doubled that in the second when the Border effort fell away.

Scorers:

Golden Lions 82 (28). Tries: Chris Newman, Christiaan Meyer, Damien Engledoe (2), Hanco Deale, Jacques Nel, Jannie Stander, Johannes Snyman, Koch Marx (2), Selom Gavor, Thabo Mabuza. Conversions: Deale (7), Ruan Janse van Rensburg (4).
Border 6 (0). Penalties: Devandre Sissing (2).
