In the Hotseat - Jurie Roux from Cape Town

Every week we give readers of BOKzine the opportunity to ask questions of South African rugby personalities. Simply sign up for our weekly fan newsletter, BOKzine, by clicking here!

Your Question: Hi, by promising the Kings a place in the Super Rugby comp do you think SARU has potentially dammed one of the current clubs most likely the Lions? I say this as there is almost no chance of expanding the comp and the financial and logistical implications of relegating the Lions will mean that if it was to re enter the comp they would be back to square one. Chris Phillips

Jurie Answers: Hi Chris, rugby’s commitment to taking Vodacom Super Rugby to the Eastern Cape goes back more than half a decade and has twice been postponed. The decision to include them in 2013 has been reaffirmed on a number of occasions – most recently by all 14 provinces as recently as January. We have moved heaven and earth over a number of years in an attempt to find a way to include a South African franchise in the competition. If that proves impossible in the short term then a hard choice needs to be made.

Your Question: Hi Jurie, I'm writing to you from sunny England where the locals are talking up their prospects for the June tests. The potential selection of Victor Matfield does smack of a fear of losing rather inspire confidence of winning. Your thoughts? - chris sysum

Jurie Answers: Hi Chris, this is an easy one for me: I’m not the coach and I’m not a selector and would never presume to be either so what I might or might think about any selection is irrelevant. But what I do know is that the Springboks don’t have a losing mentality and they don’t fear losing – they only think about the best ways to win.

Your Question: Why is it that the previous bok coach was treated so unprofessionally (thanked for services rendered in an e-mail via ...)Was it so hard for you (or your little puppet Oregan and his handmaiden Mark) to call a meeting with the man after the WC so he could make other plans? I CHALLENGE YOU TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS HONESTLY(and we know that honesty is not SARU's strongpoint)JURIE! – Christo

Jurie Answers: Hi Christo, Peter was publicly thanked for his services on several occasions. His contract was extended by SARU to assist in the transition to “normal” life at a time when there was no role for him to play. And I met him on more than one occasion in my office this year. I would suggest that our handling of the coach’s departure at a time when everyone knew his contract was coming to an end was beyond reproach.

Your Question: Good afternoon, Mr. Roux. I would love to know what the status is of the SupeRugby tournament participants for next season? Are the Lions going to be relegated? Should this happen, will they then just fade into relative obscurity and basically die or will they be able to compete in other types of competition other than Vodacom Cup? Thanks a lot for your reading of this message. - Clive Harding

Jurie Answers: Dear Clive, I think I have sketched in most of the background to Chris’s question above and, clearly, if a franchise misses out on Vodacom Super Rugby there will be challenges. There is not an alternative ‘Super Rugby’ equivalent competition into which any Southern hemisphere team would fall – the best that is available across the region is, in fact, our Vodacom Cup. You may recall that a number of years ago a younger Heyneke Meyer used victory in that tournament to blood a number of young players on which not only the current Bulls dynasty was built but also, arguably, the Springboks’ World Cup victory of 2007.

Your Question: Hi Jurie I think it was a great decision to appoint Heyneke and Rassie, so well done for making a rugby (not political) decision there. I'd just like to know who promised the EP "Kings" a place in the Super Rugby competition, without consulting SANZAR about a possible sixth franchise? – Wes

Jurie Answers: Hi Wes, as explained to Chris above, it was decision taken by all of rugby some years ago. Most recently we bid for the fifth franchise in the Australian conference when the competition expanded to 15 teams. The independent adjudication panel rated the Kings’ case the far superior of the two bids but the place was awarded to Melbourne purely on geographical grounds. Our SANZAR partners, therefore, have been fully aware of our desire for a sixth franchise to accommodate one of most historic rugby regions for a number of years.

Theo asked about the T40 Schools project in the Eastern Province and Jurie said hopefully by the time the Coca- Cola Craven Week kicks off in PE in July.

Your Question: Jurie, the announcement that the EP Kings will play in the Superrugby competition in 2013 was made without the plan to make it possible. Can you ellaborate on how SA Rugby will fit this into the present agreement? - Naas Viljoen

Jurie Answers: Hi Naas, I think I have covered most of this in answers to Chris, Clive and Wes above. The present agreement with SANZAR is not an obstacle in itself. It merely requires SARU to provide five entrants – which are chosen at our discretion.
