In the Hot Seat - Johann van Graan from Joburg
August 30, 2012

Johann answers: Baie dankie Dirk.

Your Question: Why is the springboks not using the rolling mall? – Martin

Johann answers: We will always try to use the maul at the right time of the game on the right position on the field, but sometimes the opponents defend the lineout well and then we need to alter our plans. Having said that, we scored a try from a maul (by Marcell) against Argentina at Newlands, which was great!

Your Question: JUST LOOK HOW THE BLUE BULLS PLAYED ON SATERDAY, THATS THE WAY WE PLAY RUGBY, ITS CALLED RUNNING RUGBY, AND IF YOU PLAY LIKE THAT YOU CAN WIN ANY TEAM, SORRY IVE GOT NO QUESTION JUST PLAY RUNNING RUGBY AND YOU WILL WIN THE GAMES, TO MUCH FAZES ITS NO GOOD. – MELVIN HORSTMANN

Johann answers: We hear what you’re saying Melvin and I have to agree with you, it was a most enjoyable match between the Blue Bulls and the Sharks on Saturday. But allow me to point out some stats which could show that perceptions around rugby can be quite wrong (and this is not an attack on you – I like to debate rugby matters): the Bulls scored three tries and the Sharks scored four. All the Bulls’ tries were from turn-overs, mainly thanks to good defence. The Sharks also had more possession and territory than the Bulls (51% to 49%). But the kicking stats really interested me – the Sharks kicked the ball 21 times during the game and the Bulls 30 times, which could point to the Bulls actually playing less running rugby than the Sharks. So the point is that things are not always as it seems. In the end, playing the correct kind of rugby in the right positions on the field is what we will be aiming for, as well as breaking down defences and scoring as many tries as possible.
