Boland ease past Valke

Three first-half tries secured the Regent Boland Cavaliers a 20-7 victory over the visiting Valke in their Absa Currie Cup first division match played at a very cold and wet Boland Stadium in Wellington on Friday afternoon.

The match started 50 minutes later than the scheduled start due to heavy rainfall.

After referee Marius van der Westhuizen gave the go-ahead for the game to start it was the visitors who started brightly.

Flyhalf Juan Kotze missed an early penalty opportunity and this spurred the hosts on. Eightman Zandré Jordaan made a great break and found centre Braam Gerber, who put flying winger Senan van der Merwe away for the try.

Len Olivier missed the subsequent conversion and Boland started to find their rhythm. Barely a couple of minutes later Van der Merwe caught an aimless kick by the Valke and set off along the touchline similar to how Wallaby winger Israel Folau did in the first test in the British and Irish Lions series.

Van der Merwe backed his pace and left numerous Valke defenders in his wake to score a superb individual try.

Olivier was wayward with his kicking again and Boland led 10-0 after 18 minutes, but he found the target with a penalty to extend the lead to 13-0.

Captain Franzel September barged his way over the line for the second week in a row and Olivier added the extras with a conversion.

With five minutes left before halftime the Valke had yet to show any signs of threatening the Boland dominance, but scrumhalf Anrich Richter managed to burrow his way over the line to score a crucial try for the visitors. Kotze finally came good with his kicking and belted the conversion over to narrow the gap to 20-7.

Halftime saw a change of jerseys by both teams with Boland coming out in white and the Valke reverting to their traditional red strip. Unfortunately for the spectators neither team played any rugby in the second stanza and the quality of play worsened along with the visibility due to the failing light.

Kotze missed yet another penalty and the scorekeeper remained untroubled until the end of the match, with Boland recording a 20-7 victory.

Neither coaches would have been impressed with the play on the day, but Loffie Eloff would have been grateful of the fact his charges secured their third win on the trot.

The Valke remained among the basement dwellers of the First Division, still searching for their first victory. Boland face the Eastern Province Kings next, and will know that a complete 80-minute performance is a prerequisite for any chance of winning in Port Elizabeth.

SCORERS:

Regent Boland Cavaliers – Tries: Senan van der Merwe (2), Franzel September; Conversions: Len Olivier; Penalties: Len Olivier
