The Free State Cheetahs have won their second game in this year's Absa Currie Cup competition by beating Griquas 36-25 in the sides' tussle at GWK Park in Kimberley on Saturday.
The visitors beat the Kimberley-based side in Bloemfontein three weeks ago and managed more of the same when they scored five tries for a much needed bonus point against the Peacock Blues.
Griquas started well, but it was the visitors that used their possession early on as flyhalf Willie du Plessis kicked a penalty in the eights minute to put the Cheetahs in the lead.
That sparked the visitors to come alight and what followed was an impressive performance in the first half that gave the Cheetahs a comfortable lead at the break.
The hosts had another bad first half, first losing eighth man Carel Greeff to a yellow card following a good try by Cheetahs lock Francois Uys before Du Plessis kicked a penalty to stretch his side's lead to eight points.
Cheetahs winger Rayno Benjamin scored his side's second try of the afternoon with Du Plessis converting. To add to Griquas' woes, Greeff was again yellow carded and then automatically red carded for another professional foul, leaving the hosts with 14 men on the park.
Griquas got a little something to smile about when flyhalf Dean Grant kicked a penalty shortly before halftime, but Griquas coach Hawies Fourie would still be very unhappy trailing by 15-3 at the break.
The hosts reduced the deficit to seven points as scrumhalf Tian Meyer scored a good individual try by charging down a kick on the Cheetahs goal line. Grant couldn't convert, but it still gave Griquas something to smile about even though they lost a man to the bin in the first 40 minutes.
The try sparked a helter skelter period of play, where Griquas took the lead via a good try by hooker Martin Bezuidenhout before the Cheetahs retook it with a counter attack by fullback Clayton Blommetjies.
The visitors then put the result beyond doubt as flanker Tienie Burger burst over from a driving maul and replacement flyhalf Pieter-Steyn de Wet slotted the conversion. A try near the end by eighth man Jean Cook gave the Cheetahs an emphatic win.
