In a bottom-of-the log Absa Currie Cup clash, the visiting Griffons outplayed a game Border Bulldogs side 41-15 at Buffalo City Stadium, after leading 29-10 at halftime.

Griffons scrumhalf Boela Abrahms dictated matters with some tracer-like passes and astute kicks, and to be honest, Border never looked like getting into this game, despite their improved play in recent games.

Griffons centre Norman Nelson made an excellent break after five minutes and almost scored, but some tight defence by Border was all in vain as the referee gave the visitors two penalties on the five-metre line within two minutes.

Both times the Griffons chose a lineout and eventually Nelson, on the second occasion, barged over after a strong break by prop Elndre Huggett.

Flyhalf Pieter de Wet coverted and a few minutes later he succeeded with a penalty after a Border tackler failed to release the ball.

The Griffons lock Werner Lourens then scored a try set up by the forwards, but De Wet missed the conversion.

After 28 minutes Abrahms scored a superb try, breaking on the blindside from about 30 metres out, throwing a couple of dummies, and diving over in the left hand corner without a hand laid on him. De Wet succeeded with a difficult kick.

With halftime looming Border, against the general run of play, broke through and their eighthman Rynardt van Wyk scored a fine try, converted by Banda. With the score 22-10 it appeared that Border would change-over with only a 12-point deficit, but Griffons flank, Armandt Koster, who had played a storming game, had other ideas, and he danced through the Border defence for De Wet to add the two points and leave the home team adrift by 19 points.

The Griffons continued their strong showing and superiority in the second half with tries by centre Joubert Horn and fullback Tertius Maarman, with De wet succeeding with the first.

The only bright spot for Border came when centre Lundi Ralarala retaliated with an excellent break and scored alongside the left hand post but Banda failed to convert.

The match ended with Border pressing hard for a try but the final whistle blew, leaving the home team without a win during this Currie Cup qualifying season.

Border flyhalf Thembani Mkokeli celebrated a rare achievement, reaching his 100th cap in the game. He was a member of the victorious World Cup under 19 SA in 2003.

“This is a very special achievement for me,” he said. “I dedicate this accomplishment to all those who saw a talent in me when I was a young boy and those that continue to support me throughout my career.”
