Big wins dominate Central Amateur opening day
September 17, 2013
Griquas, the KZN Duikers, Free State and the Griffons on Monday earned strong starts to the Central Amateur Provincial Competition in Kimberley as they registered valuable victories to kick-start their campaigns.

Griquas registered the biggest victory of the day as they thumped Griffons Rural 40-7, while the KZN Duikers defeated Free State Rural 44-12 and Free State beat KZN Rural 31-11 in a handful of big wins.

The Griffons, meanwhile, registered a 46-32 win against Griquas Rural.

Griquas produced a formidable performance against Griffons Rural and built up an encouraging 26-0 lead at the break, which left the Welkom team with hard work in the second half to claw their way back into the match.

But they battled to penetrate the solid Griquas defence, and were forced to settle for a converted try to show for their efforts.

Griquas, meanwhile, crossed the tryline six times in total with centre Johan Peens and wing Gustav Stander each scoring twice.

The KZN Duikers were equally convincing in their showing against Free State Rural as they outscored the opposition seven tries to two for their morale-boosting victory.

Such was their dominance, they were 20-5 ahead at half-time. They continued to assert their authority in the second half and limited Free State Rural to a converted try after the break.

Free State were also clinical in their attack as they scored four tries, while fullback Frankie Ferreira had a good day with the boot as he slotted over all four conversions and a penalty to push his team’s score to 31.

A strong first half by the Griffons, meanwhile, set them up for a victory against Griquas Rural, as they boasted an encouraging 31-10 lead at the break.

Griquas Rural, however, fought back strongly in the second half and managed to dot down five tries in total, but these efforts were insufficient as the Griffons outscored them by a try, while flyhalf Michael Pienaar kept the scoreboard ticking with a try, four conversions and two penalties for a personal contribution of 20 points.
