Eagles thrash Cavaliers

A rampant SWD Eagles outfit ran in six tries as they downed the Regent Boland Cavaliers by 46-17 (halftime 6-10) in their South Section Vodacom Cup clash in Swellendam on Saturday.

Duwayne Smart topped the try-scoring charts in the match with a brace, but it was the Cavaliers who initially looked the stronger of the two teams as they deservedly took a four-point advantage into the break.

And despite an improvement from the home side when play resumed, Boland trailed by a slender 18-17 margin with 15 minutes remaining in what had been a hard-fought clash upfront.

But things sadly got away from the visitors in the remaining minutes, as the Eagles crashed over the line on four further occasions to seal an important bonus-point win that sees them move up to second place in the South Section standings, while the winless Cavaliers remain rooted to the foot of the table having yet to register a point.

But it was the men from the Boland who drew first blood in a tough opening quarter, as fullback Eric Zana's 17th-minute penalty provided due reward for their sustained pressure early on in proceedings.

Eagles flyhalf Karlo Aspeling was on hand to provide the reply with a three-pointer of his own on the half-hour mark, but substitute Christian Rust regained the lead for the Cavaliers as he completed a well-worked team try with his first touch of the ball in the 33rd minute.

Zana made no mistake with the conversion, and although Aspeling added a penalty on the stroke of halftime, the Cavaliers took an unexpected 10-6 lead into the break.

The reply from the hosts was emphatic, as tries from Smart and Shaun Raubenheimer within eight minutes of the resumption appeared to give their side a much-needed shot in the arm, but Tiaan Radyn's 57th-minute score narrowed the gap to one point and put the Cavaliers right back into the ball game once again.

But with 14 minutes remaining and a grand-stand finish on the cards, the Cavaliers rather ran out of steam, as tries from Adolf Petzer, Hentzwill Pedro, Grant le Roux and a second for Smart gave the Eagles an invaluable bonus-point triumph, albeit by a somewhat flattering margin of 29 points.
