Former African Bok passes away
July 16, 2013
The South African Rugby Union has been saddened by the news of the passing of Gibson Gawalayo, a former Swallows RFC scrumhalf who played in six Test matches for the South African African Rugby Football Board between 1973 and 1976.

After scoring a try on debut against the SA Rugby Federation Proteas in 1973, he played against them in twice in 1974, whilst also earning caps against France and the British & Irish Lions in the same year.

Gawalayo also played against Rome & Districts and Italy Under-23 Select XV during a tour to Italy in 1974.

At provincial level, Gawalayo, a former high school pupil at Mzomhle, represented Border and Eastern Province in the interprovincial competition of the SA African Rugby Football Board.

A memorial service will be held at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre on 18 July and the funeral will take place at Siyakele Khonzi Sports Centre in Kwa-Nobuhle, Uitenhage on 20 July 2013.
