The SWD Eagles ran riot in the second half to trounce the Regent Boland Cavaliers 44-12 (halftime 13-12) in the Vodacom Cup match at the Callie de Wet Stadium in Robertson on Saturday.

Flyhalf Jeff Taljaard scored 19 points with the boot via five conversions and three penalties as the visitors held the hosts scoreless in the second half.

The first half had been a seesaw battle, with the Eagles moving into a 13-0 lead after just 14 minutes, thanks to a try by left wing Johan Herbst. Taljaard converted the try after he had slotted two penalties in the fifth and 10th minutes of the match.

Albert Trytsman brought the hosts back into the match with a lovely try in the 17th minute, which Garth April converted to close the gap to six points.

Lock PJ van Zyl went over for the Cavaliers' second try after about five phases of play by the forwards keeping the ball in hand. April missed the conversion and the score remained at 13-12 to the visitors up until halftime.

But the Eagles came out a different team in the second half, and the hosts were not helped by the fact that they received two yellow cards.

First, Franzel September was given his marching orders in the 46th minute after the team had been continuously warned for repeated infringements. Six minutes from time, prop Francois Hanekom was sent to the sin bin after repeatedly infringing in the scrum.

The Eagles were awarded a penalty try three minutes after the restart, which Taljaard converted to move the visitors into an eight-point lead. Fullback Deroy Rhoode crossed the white line five minutes later to extend the lead to 15 points, after Taljaard converted yet again.

The visitors secured their bonus point in the 55th minute when eighth-man Lyndon Hartnick forced his way over the tryline. The former Free State Cheetahs and Springbok flanker, Kabamba Floors, who had a energetic afternoon, finished off the fifth try for the Eagles in the 64th minute of the match.

Taljaard, who had a perfect day with the boot, slotted a penalty 10 minutes from time to seal the victory. The visitors outscored their hosts by 31-0 in the second half, to get back to winning ways after losing to the Pampas last week.
